Insulin Resistance.

Insulin resistance is a complex genetic condition which can effect men and women, children, athletes and adults and is a major cause of excess body fat.
People with increased risk of insulin resistance:
  • Have battled with weight for a long time
  • Have skin tags
  • Irregular, heavy or absent periods
  • Easy weight gain but find it hard to lose weight
  • May have type 2 diabetes in their family

Sarah is an expert with insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance was a wonderful “survival” mechanism, terrific for famines but not necessary in Australia where food is plentiful. 1 in 4 insulin resistant adults will progress to develop type 2 diabetes within 10-40 years, and in children may occur within 5-10years. Insulin resistance is also thought to have a role in Alzheimers. So it is important that we are pro-active in managing teens and adults who have or are at high risk of the condition.

Insulin resistance increases:
  • With age
  • Puberty
  • During pregnancy
  • Oral contraceptive use
  • With high body fat levels
  • Some medications

Obesity is an aggravating issue but not the primary cause of insulin resistance as non-obese PCOS women can also be insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is managed with a diet and exercise regime and in some cases mediation is also used.
