- Is a leading cause of kidney failure and dialysis
- Increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times
- Is a major cause of limb amputations
- Affects mental health as well as physical health. Depression, anxiety and distress occur in more than 30% of all people with diabetes.
- Approximately 2 million Australians are at risk of type 2 Diabetes.
- Risk is increased by low levels of exercise, excess “tummy fat”, family history and insulin resistance. Complications can be serious if blood sugar levels are not controlled.

- Leg cramps
Diabetes Risk
- One parent with type 2 diabetes = 2 x risk of developing type 2 diabetes
- Both parents with diabetes = 6 x risk of developing type 2 diabetes
- Brother or sister with type 2 diabetes = 4 x risk of developing type 2 diabetes
